Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
