EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
